The Tokyo Imperial Palace (皇居, Kōkyo, literally \"Imperial Residence\") is the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan. It is located in Chiyoda, Tokyo. In 1968, the eastern part of the Palace Gardens was renamed Higashi-Gyoen (東御苑), which means East Garden, and it became a public park. There is no admission fee for entering the garden. In order to control the number of visitors in the garden, visitors are required to secure their entrance passes at the gates before they are allowed to enter the garden. At the end of the visit, visitors need to return their passes to the guards at the gates before they are allowed to leave the garden.
