Why Tankanawa has so many temples?
After Edo, the old Tokyo city, suffered the Great Fire of Meireki, also known as the Furisode Fire, in 1657, 70% of the city and more than 100,000 lives were destroyed. To avoid another disaster caused by a similar fire, the city was re-built with wider roads to permit evacuation and prevent the spread of fire. As a result of this, many temples and shrines had to be relocated to the outside area of the capital city. Many of the temples in Takanawa today were relocated from Edo to their present sites after the Great Fire of Meireki.
