Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square), Kuala Lumpur

Dataran Merdeka, literally means the Square of Independence, was originally the cricket green of the Selangor Club (now known as Royal Selangor Club).

The square is surrounded by several historical buildings, i.e. Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Royal Selangor Club Complex, Music Museum, Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, St. Mary’s Anglican Cathedral, National Textile Museum, Music Museum, Old City Hall Theatre, Old High Court Building and Perpustakaan Kuala Lumpur.

Every year, in the morning of Merdeka Day (31 August) as well as Malaysia Day (16 September), thousands of spectators from all around the city would come to this part of the city to watch the colourful parade and performances held at the Merdeka Square.
