Melaka – A city where East meets West
Melaka City is the capital of the Melaka State of Malaysia. It was also the capital of Malacca Sultanate and the centre of Malay world in the 15th century. As Melaka was colonized by Portuguese, Dutch and the British, the town’s culture and architecture were greatly influenced by these countries.
Centuries ago, Melaka had developed a very close trading relationship with China; the influence of the Chinese culture can be easily seen in the town. In fact, Jonker Street is still the Chinatown of Melaka today. Peranakan architecture can still be seen among the houses in Jonker Street.
All Melaka’s main attractions, i.e. Jonker Street, St. Paul’s Hill, the Stadthuys, Melaka River, etc., are in its city centre. You should come to Melaka during the weekend, as Jonker Street would turn into a huge food fair and a fun party place at night.
