Love Lock Bridges
Pont de l'Archeveche, Paris, France
and
Pont Des Arts
If you take a stroll along the River Seine, you probably would spot couple bridges, i.e. Pont de l'Archeveche and Pont Des Arts, with many padlocks attached to them. The custom of attaching padlocks to bridge railings is a way for two lovers to pledge their undying love to each other. Some people believe this practice originated from the Italian novel Ho voglia di te (2006; English: I Want You) by Federico Moccia. In the book, two lovers attached a padlock, with their names engraved on it, to a lamp post on a bridge and threw its key into the River Tiber in Rome.
Paris, being one of the most romantic cities in the world, many couples would come here to pledge their love with their padlocks attached to the bridges. As the number of the “Love Locks” increased, the bridges’ railings become overloaded and unsafe. The city government is finding ways to stop this practice.
