1881 Heritage, Former Marine Police Headquarters

Built in 1884, 1881 Heritage, Former Marine Police Headquarters, is one of the oldest surviving government buildings in Hong Kong. The Heritage compound has two structural buildings, the main building and the signal tower. The main building, the station of the former Marine Police Headquarters, was featured in Jacky Chan’s films Project A and Project A Part II. The Signal Tower was used to provide time signals and typhoon signals to the ships in the harbour in the old time.

You may wonder why the Signal Tower was built by the sea and not up on a hill. In 1880s, there was no tall building in Hong Kong. Without the land reclamation, that took place many years later, its location had a view of more than 180 degrees of the Victoria Harbour. Time and typhoon signals of the tower could be seen by all the fishermen in the harbour.
