Kamenita vrata – Stone Gate

Stone Gate (Kamenita Vrata) is the only remaining gate of the four main gates, the west gate on Mesnička Street, the north Opatička Street gate, Dverce - the south gate and the east Kamenita vrata – Stone Gate, of Gradec(AKA Gornji Grad - upper Town). Gradec was given a royal charter, also known as the Golden Bull, by King Béla IV in 1242. This charter allowed the citizens of Gradec to have the right to manage their own affairs of their town.
Today, Kamenita Vrata (Stone Gate) is one of most visited landmarks of Zagreb. In the gate, you will find a shrine with a painting of Virgin Mary and Child. The painting was done by an unknown artist in 17th century. According to the legion, people who would light a candle and make his prayers to the Virgin Mary in the shrine, will have his prayers answered. In fact, a common phrase used by the citizens of Zagreb in the old days was “I will light a candle in Stone Gate if Virgin Mary hears my prayer”.
