If you are visiting U. T. Austin, you should make a stop at the Clock Tower and join the 45 minute-long guided tour, admission fee USD6.00. It will take you up to the 28th floor observation deck of the Tower. From there you may have a great view of the University’s campus and the downtown Austin.
On August 1, 1966, there was a very sad event taken at this tower. On that day, an engineering student, Charles Whitman, who took away the lives of 17 people and wounded 32 others in a mass shooting rampage. After that incidence, the Tower was closed for approx. 2 years. It, then, was reopened in 1968. The Tower was closed to the public for a second time in 1975, after the suicides, jumping off the observation deck, of 4 people. On September 15, 1999, the Tower was re-opened again, but only by controlled access. Visitors can only visit the Tower through guided tours and they must be screened by metal detectors before entering the buildin
