Hong Kong Until the First Anglo-Chinese War (1839–42), known as the Opium War, Hong Kong was pretty much a tiny island known to no one, not even to most of the folks in Northern China. After the Opium War, Hong Kong became a British Colony. Before the Chinese Economic Reform, which took place in 1978, Hong Kong was serving as the gateway, for the western countries, to China. On October 1, 1997, Hong Kong was turned over to China. Based on the Sino-British Joint Declaration, Hong Kong, under the "One country, two systems" Principle, would enjoy a high degree of autonomy as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) for at least 50 years beyond the 1997 handover. Due to Hong Kong’s mature legal system, Hong Kong is playing a very important role, even after its handover to China, for oversea multi-National companies that are doing business in China. Due to the fact that there are no import taxes and sales taxes in Hong Kong, this city is a “Heaven for Shoppers”, particularly for cosmetics, fashion, brand name handbags and other luxurious items.
